I'm a little late on the draw but I think I still have time to join this blog challenge. The goal is to blog through the alphabet, A-Z, in the month of April, taking Sundays off. I think I can handle this and maybe it'll be a good discipline to get my blog going again.
When I asked my six year old to think of a word that started with A her first response was of course, apple. Everybody knows that. That is probably the first word most English speakers think of when someone says, "A is for ____."
Here in the Philippines apples are not very popular. Though they are a main staple in the western world (think: apple slices, applesauce & apple pie), here they are expensive and unvaried since they have to be imported from other countries.
I think I've only seen three varieties since living here: Fuji apples, Granny Smith, and one other that I only saw once and I can't remember the name.
So, we miss apples! My favorite variety is Jonathan, which is the kind we used to get from the orchard in Nebraska. I also miss Cortland and McIntosh which I could buy in Ontario. My girls miss the sour little apples from Grampa and Gramma's tree in their back yard.
The Fuji apples we buy here come with a clever little pink foam net wrapped around them to prevent them bruising in transport, I think. It makes them look kind of fancy which is good since we pay so much for them! 170 pesos for 6 apples- converted that is $3.95 CAD and USD.
Check back if you want to see what we come up with for B! You know you want to. ;)

Hi Valerie! Did you sign up on the list? If you do, and today's the last day you can do it, you will get lots of visits this month:) Sorry you are losing your "B" today... :(
Is that the word you expected your 6 year old to pick? Must not be too egocentric :) love to you!

So glad to see that I wasn't the only one that chose apple for A! Good luck with the challenge.
